In the fall of 2019, JFK Tech Guys John Crescitelli and Jack Dembkowski received an NEF grant to advance the STEM program at JFK. Working with the Northampton Education Foundation, Eduporium, and Droneblocks , February 2020 was an exciting time when 10 drones and all accompanying materials showed up at JFK. Then Covid hit, and those packages sat. UNTIL NOW!

Students are now fully immersed in a hands-on Enrichment course, called Learn to Code with Drones! The course teaches STEM and the real-world application of drone technology. Drones are not only a fun and engaging tool, but the applications in the STEM education are proving to be extensive and inclusive. The course is conducive to students with diverse learning styles, helping them explore math, science, and logic through fun and practical applications.

Kids are working in basic coding platforms to autonomously fly their drones on different missions. They design coded flight plans, then test and retest as missions become more challenging. They learn about authentic applications and understanding how drones are used to help actively problem-solve real world situations.

We are so thankful to the NEF, and are looking forward to the fall, when we can bring this great course to more JFK students.
