What is CalSCHLS?
CalSCHLS is a survey system offered by the California Department of Education (CDE) to provide quality local data to districts, schools, and communities on school climate and safety; learning supports and barriers; and youth development, health, and wellness. The CDE surveys assess perceptions of students, staff, and parents/guardians about school climate, student well-being, and the learning environment in California public schools. Student participation is voluntary. It is also very important. The information provided will help guide district and school efforts to promote safety, enhance learning supports, improve student achievement, and reduce health risks that stand as barriers to learning.· This is an anonymous survey. It is designed so that no one can be identified from the data. Students do not have to respond to any questions that they feel could be used to identify them. Instruct them to simply skip any such questions.
· All questions apply to this school only.
· The results are for the use of the district. CDE and WestEd will preserve data confidentiality and refer any data requests to the district.
California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS)
The CHKS is a modular, anonymous assessment recommended for students age 10 (grade 5) and above. It is focused on the five most important areas for guiding school and student improvement:
- student connectedness, learning engagement/motivation, and attendance;
- school climate, culture, and conditions;
- school safety, including violence perpetration and victimization/bullying;
- physical and mental well-being and social-emotional learning; and
- student supports, including resilience-promoting developmental factors (caring relationships, high expectations, and meaningful participation).
