What is the size of the Special Education Classes?
Posted by:Academic Support classes are typically 4 - 6 students with one teacher and an instructional assistant.
Specialized Social Studies, Language Arts, and Math classes are typically fewer than 12 students with a teacher and two instructional assistants.
-
How many counselors are there?
Posted by:There is one counselor per grade level that loops up with the students. Janet Jamesson will be the counselor for the incoming 2023-24 sixth graders. She will follow them through 8th grade for continuity.
-
How are the general education teachers informed about student IEP accommodations and goals?
Posted by:Each student’s case manager provides this information to each of the student’s general education teachers. They also meet with teachers to review accommodations and collaborate regarding assignments as needed.
-
Are speech and OT provided at MVMS?
Posted by:Yes, there is a speech and occupational therapist assigned to MVMS to provide services per a student’s IEP. As each student at MVMS has a 1:1 iPad, the Occupational Therapist often focuses on assisting students with using technology tools effectively in their classes and for assigned school work.
-
How is math placement determined?
Posted by:Most students will take the traditional 6th-grade math class.
A supported math class that covers the 6th-grade curriculum at a slower pace is an option that is considered based on 5th-grade teacher / elementary special education case manager recommendation.
There is also a Specialized Academic Instruction Math class for students whose IEPs indicate that they need an alternate math program.
-
Can students with IEP take Electives?
Posted by:Yes. 6th grade students may choose from Wheel, Music or Art classes.
-
How much homework will my child have in middle school?
Posted by:The District's policy for homework in 6th grade is that students may have up to 60 minutes of homework per night as well as nightly reading. The amount of homework varies by teacher. Students may have time to begin homework in their Academic Support Class. Additionally, there is support available from the special education instructional assistants during the hour after school on early release Wednesdays. If your child is struggling with homework, it is important to discuss this with your child's IEP case manager so that the IEP team can ensure that appropriate accommodations are in place.
-
Where can I connect with other parents about the transition to middle school?
Posted by:We encourage families to connect with It Takes a Village and consider attending meetings or the First Friday Connect coffee get-togethers.

Information for Incoming 6th Graders with IEPs
On Wednesday, February 15, 2023, Erin Conklin, Mill Valley's Director of Student Services, in collaboration with the Middle School special education team, hosted an in-person parent-education session designed to begin the orientation of our incoming 6th-grade students. As this was a live event, it was not recorded. However, you can view our March 2022 virtual presentation to understand more about the range of services provided at MVMS.
