MBE Service Projects 2017-2018 School YearPre-Kindergarten-- Childrens' Hopsital: Collect items from patients' wish lists to be donated to those in need. (March 2018)Kindergarten--Birmingham Reads: Kindergarten students have been challenged to gather donated books for Better Basics, a local charity that promotes reading through intervention and enrichment. (April 2018)1st Grade-- Valentines for Children's Hospital: Students crafted Valentine's for ill children and delivered them to Children's Hospital in Birmingham. (January 2018)2nd Grade-- Camp Sam (Camp Smile-A-Mile): Supported this camp that provides for children with cancer and their families. (February 2018)3rd Grade-- Humane Society: Due to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, the students collected needed items for displaced animals and families that could not provide necessities to their pets. (October 2017)
4th Grade-- YWCA Santa's Workshop (December 2017)
5th Grade-- Letters to Veterans: Fifth graders wrote thoughtful letters to Veterans. They demonstrated kindness and appreciation for those who are serving in the military. (November 2017)
6th Grade-- Stop Hunger Now: Sixth graders packaged food items to send to those in need. (September 2017)
MBE Service Projects 2016-2017 School YearPre-Kindergarten-- Used Toy Drive Pre-K students collected gently used toys for ARC of Shelby County. Thank you Pre-K! (September 2016)Kindergarten-- Birmingham Reads: Kindergarten students have been challenged to gather donated books for the local book drive. Birmingham Reads is trying to reach 40,000 books collected. (April 2017)1st Grade-- Mountain Brook Police & Fire Department Appreciation (March 2017)2nd Grade-- Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama: Students will collect pop top tabs to be donated for funds to benefit the Ronald McDonald House. This project helps RMHCA reach their goal of $20,000 from pop tabs each year. (December 2016)3rd Grade-- Feed a Soul, Fill a Heart: Third graders will work on feeding the Birmingham homeless. This work will be done with Miss Iron City, Cassidy Jo Jacks. (January 2017)
4th Grade-- YWCA Women/Children: 4th grade students worked to earn money to purchase gifts that would be donated to the YMCA's Santa's Workshop. The students were all challenged to bring a toy to donate that is for someone their own age. (November 2016)
5th Grade-- Letters to Veterans: Fifth graders wrote thoughtful letters to Veterans. They demonstrated kindness and appreciation for those who are serving in the military. (October 2016)
6th Grade-- Cards Agency from Hands-On Birmingham (February 2017)
PAGE Classes-- Holiday Exchange: Students gathered small items including toys and candies to send to students in Thailand. Students at the partnering school house students 5-16 years old. Birmingham Reads is trying to reach 40,000 books collected. Look for the donations on WVTM/13 at the end of April (2016). *Kindergarten collected 1,030 books for the April 2016 book drive.1st Grade-- Children's Hospital of Alabama: First grade will use a week in March to collect bubbles, playing cards, play-doh, and other small toys and books to donate to Children's Hospital of Alabama. These toys will be distributed to bring comfort and a symbol of support to ill children and their families who are receiving treatment at the hospital.2nd Grade-- Spreading the Love: Second Graders collected letters of love and appreciation from every grade level to distribute to our local public service workers during February. These service workers included: librarians, police officers, fire fighters, and many others.3rd Grade-- Socks and Underwear Drive: Third graders saw a need to help the local homeless community and collected socks and underwear. They collected over 900 items; 500 pairs of socks, 400+ pairs of underwear.
4th Grade-- Winter Coat Drive: Fourth graders collected and distributed hats, gloves, and coats during the fall for students in need. The students generated flyers and promoted the event every day at carpool. They collected enough coats to fill 15 large 30 gallon bags.
5th Grade-- Letters to Veterans: Fifth graders wrote thoughtful letters to Veterans. They demonstrated kindness and appreciation for those who are serving in the military.
6th Grade-- Letters to Kindergarten: Sixth grade students wrote letters to Kindergarteners to welcome them to a new school. They provided a comfort to our youngest students as they began their exciting new adventure at MBE.
