Massachusetts has a compulsory school attendance law, General Laws Chapter 76, § 1, which applies to all children between the ages of 6 and 16. While the law requires that all children receive an education, it also recognizes the right of parents to choose from among several educational options. All children of school age have a right to be enrolled in the public schools of the city or town in which they reside. Parents may also choose to enroll their children in an approved private school or a school choice program, or they may opt to educate their child at home. In any case, the school district where the child resides has a legal duty to review and approve the program, ensuring that all students receive an education that is equivalent to that offered in the public school.
Process of initiating home schooling of Ludlow students
1. The parent completes the home instruction notification/approval form and submits it to the Curriculum Office. To access/download the form select this PDF.
2. The Director of Curriculum will approve, seek modification of, or disapprove the plan.
3. Once the plan is approved, the parent will withdraw the student from the school he or she attends, and the home education program may begin.
4. The parent will regularly assess the child’s progress in the method agreed upon and will send copies of these assessments to the curriculum office by June of each year.
5. Each subsequent year, the parent will submit a letter of intent to continue home schooling, and include a curriculum outline/syllabus for the new grade level.
