Celebrate Literacy Hopkins County Kentucky Literacy Celebration Week is an annual collaboration among several institutions. The week celebrates accomplishments in literacy and focuses on challenges we still face as a state. The 2016-2017 Hopkins County Celebration will include a 5K Run/Walk and Fun Walk, author's visit and more. The statewide celebration will be held March 20-25, 2017.
Book It! 5K Run/Fun Walk
This second annual 5K Run/Walk and 1-mile Fun Walk on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2017, will raise awareness of literacy and the importance of reading. It will also raise funds for the celebration. Participants will be asked to donate new/used books. Children will be given a book at the finish line. Click here for registration form.
Book Drives
The Gifted and Talented Programs in the elementary schools will conduct book drives to collect new and “gently used” reading material. These books will be placed in the Birdhouse Libraries and given to schoolchildren.
Birdhouse Libraries
The idea behind the Birdhouse Libraries is that patrons will “take a book and get a book.” The ribbon-cutting for these libraries was held during the first Hopkins County Literacy Celebration on the steps of the old Hopkins County Courthouse. At least 17 Birdhouse Libraries have been placed throughout the county.
Community Reads
Community members will read to others throughout the area, including school groups, nursing homes and more. Volunteers will be needed to take part.
Young Authors Festival
Hopkins County Schools’ annual Young Authors Festival, organized through Title 1 Parent Involvement, will be expanded as part of our observance of Kentucky Literacy Celebration. During the preceding week, an author will visit schools, before presenting awards at the festival.
'Ask Me' Buttons
During Kentucky Literacy Celebration Week, participating residents will wear "Ask Me" buttons while at a public site. Any student wearing a Literacy Celebration bracelet who asks will receive a ticket from that person for a free book. Tickets will be redeemed at the student's school.
