Heat Index Action Plan
At Ephrata Schools, student safety is our top priority. We've made plans to closely monitor Heat Index conditions that may affect student health while on campus.
We closely monitor the heat index in our area. The heat index combines air temperature and humidity to reflect how hot it actually feels. For example, when the temperature is 90°F but the humidity is very high, it can feel closer to 106°F. Understanding this helps make informed decisions to keep students and staff safe.
We have implemented a district-wide Heat Index Action Plan to guide our actions during hot weather. Here's what you can expect:
- Regular Monitoring: The heat index will be monitored at scheduled intervals throughout the day using data from Accuweather.com
- Activity Decisions: Decisions for outdoor activities - including recess, PE and sports - will follow the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) Heat Index Policy.
- High Heat Protocol: When the Heat Index reaches 105°F or higher, ("Danger" level), all outdoor activities will be rescheduled, cancelled or moved indoors.
- Student Health Needs: If your student is particularly sensitive to heat, please reach out to your student's school or coach so that we can provide additional support.
Thank you for partnering with us to help keep students safe and healthy during hot weather conditions. For additional questions or concerns, please contact your student's school.
