What is Social and Emotional Learning?

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults

  • Understand and manage emotions
  • Set and achieve positive goals
  • Feel and show empathy for others
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships
  • Make responsible decisions

When CASEL first coined the term “social and emotional learning” more than 25 years ago, we envisioned educators, families, and communities working together to support all students to achieve their goals and contribute to a more caring, just world.

Simply put, SEL is a lifelong process of learning how to better understand ourselves, connect with others, and work together to achieve goals and support our communities.

We invite you to watch two new videos to help align your communities around a clear definition for SEL, one that is anchored in a system-wide, strengths-based approach.

The Holistic Development of Young People

Everyone has a role to play to ensure high-quality social and emotional learning is an essential part of education. Educators, students, parents, and community leaders joined CASEL to answer: what is social and emotional learning and why is it essential?

Watch the video and speak up about why SEL is essential for all individuals, all schools, and the broader society.

A Systemic Approach to Social and Emotional Learning

CASEL’s framework ("the CASEL wheel") takes a systemic approach to social and emotional learning to integrate high-quality SEL opportunities throughout young people’s lives. The animated video answers: what are the core competencies and where are they promoted?
