  • What is MATHCOUNTS?

MATHCOUNTS provides engaging math programs to US middle school students of all ability levels to build confidence and improve attitudes about math and problem solving. Hickory Ridge participates in the Competition Series, which consists of four levels of competition (school, chapter, state, and national). Click HERE to learn more about the program.

    MATHCOUNTS Weekly Meetings

All students are invited to participate in the MATHCOUNTS ‘training camp’ this year. This ‘training camp’ will consist of one hour sessions on Thursdays from 4-5pm. Students will be notified of any schedule changes. These sessions will help prepare students for the MATHCOUNTS selection process that will occur in the winter. In order to be considered for the competition team, you must participate in the weekly sessions. Click HERE to see a tentative schedule for the year

How do the HRMS Mathcounts Club and Team work?

The Mathcounts Club and Team process is as follows. Dates are approximate and specifics are subject to change. Club members will meet weekly for practice and testing. A school-level Mathcounts test will be administered in January. The performance in this test, together with the weekly test performance, will form the basis for the coaches to select 1-12 members to participate in the Charlotte Chapter competition.

These 1-12 students will compete with other teams in the chapter competition, usually in February. Each school can send a team of four students plus up to 8 individual competitors. All chapter competitors - whether they are team members or individuals - participate in the individual rounds of the competition; then just the four team members participate in the team round.

Top students from each Chapter Competition advance to their State Competition, which takes place in March.

The top 4 individual competitors from each State Competition receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the National Competition, which takes place in May. These 224 students combine to form 4-person state teams, while also competing individually for the title of National Champion!

What does the Test look like?

Every MATHCOUNTS competition consists of 4 rounds - Sprint, Target, Team and Countdown Round. Altogether the rounds are designed to take about 3 hours to complete. Here’s what each round looks like.

    Club Fees and T-Shirts

A club fee of $25 if required of all participants. This will go towards snacks for our club as well as club T-shirts. Students are encouraged to wear our club t-shirts on our meeting days when they arrive. We will work together to design them for this year.
