English Language Development (ELD) services, in combination with general education, provide K-12 students whose native language is not English, the ability to develop English language proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
SIOP is a research-based, instructional model that is highly effective in helping Bethel teachers plan and deliver lessons that allow English learners to acquire academic knowledge as they develop English language.
The SIOP Model includes the following eight components:
1. Lesson Preparation
2. Building Background
3. Comprehensible Input
4. Strategies
5. Interaction
6. Practice and Application
7. Lesson Delivery
8. Review and Assessment
To qualify for the program, students are assessed on the English Language Proficiency Assessment for the 21st Century (ELPA21), which measures speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Students whose scores indicate they are in need of assistance receive ELD services.
Those who reach the Proficient level transition out of the ELD program, but will be monitored for 4 years following their exit to ensure that they are meaningfully participating in their classes similar to students who were never in an ELD program.
