Speaking

  • While speaking in front of others can be intimidating, it is essential to transforming oneself into an effective communicator.  Here are some ways we will approach speaking tasks in our classroom:

Informal Sharing- Students will be asked to share writing pieces (that are not of a personal nature) aloud frequently in class. Sharing these pieces will create informal opportunities for feedback and elicit engaging discussions.

Presentations- We have frequent, formal presentations with in response to literature or a given topic.  The presentations allow students to share their insights and learning with others in the class.  It also prepares them for the Sophomore Speech assignment.

Sophomore Speech- This is a required piece in 10th grade English.  Students will research a topic of interest.  They will then write and deliver a persuasive speech that inspires others to take action on a current cause. This is a major component of the fourth quarter grade.

Shared Inquiry- This "fish bowl" format discussion requires students to discuss questions or topics relating to a text.  While student participants analyze and discuss, student observers note conclusions drawn by the participants.  Discussions and reflections are graded.
