In order to have the appropriate 21st century skills, students must engage in a variety of reading study methods at the appropriate complexity.  Here are some of the ways readers are engaged in my classroom:

Read Alouds- At times we will listen to plays (like Macbeth or A Raisin in the Sun) this allows us to hear the emotion in a dramatic dialogue. We may also do read alouds of other narratives in order for students to hear fluent reading and develop fluency themselves.

Close Reading- These exercises encourage students to look closely at single words, phrases, or lines of text to draw conclusions about the author' craft.  During close reading, we also name and apply literary devices, discussing how they are at work in a text and what meaning the reader should gain from the use of those devices.

Guided Reading- In resource room and in credit recovery classes, guided reading groups are used to develop essential reading skills.  These groups are small with only 3-5 students and involve mini-lessons that last 10-15 minutes.  A skill is introduced, modeled, and practiced with text at the instructional level. Skills can then be applied to the literature being read in class.

Independent Reading- At times throughout the year, we will have students select independent reading books.  Students have the opportunity to explore their own interests while engaging in reading practice.

Literature Discussions- Discussions are meant to bring to light ideas about theme, human nature, and student connections.  These discussion will take place as a whole class, or in small groups.
