INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING

• Each Counselor has approximately 230 students and meets with each of them for academic planning and personal counseling. Counselors keep the same students from grades 10-12.
• Counselors meet with students individually each year for annual reviews. In this process, counselors help students to be aware of graduation requirements, examine what they have accomplished so far, and discuss what they want and need to do to be prepared for their future after graduation. Counselors also meet with students in large groups called seminars to help students do career research and ultimately develop post high school plans.
• Personal Counseling: Counselors are always willing to help students who are experiencing any concerns or problems related to school, home, family, friends, or whatever the concern may be. Additionally, counselors help in crisis situations including abuse, and threat or actual physical harm to self or others.

   

  WHO IS YOUR COUNSELOR?

  When you enter Baker High School you are assigned alphabetically to a counselor who will follow you through to graduation. The counselors' offices are located in the Counseling Office on the first floor (next to the Main Office). Counselor assignments are listed below:

  WHEN AND HOW TO SEE A COUNSELOR

  1.      Counselors are available during regular school hours every day and at other times on request.  You may schedule an appointment with a counselor or just take your chances and stop in. To make an appointment you simply go to the Counseling Office and see a counseling secretary. A pass will then be sent to you in homeroom on the day of your appointment. Remember, you are expected to keep your appointment unless you notify us in advance!!
  2.      If it's an emergency and you have to speak to a counselor immediately, be sure to make this clear to the secretary. Someone will see you!!
  3.      There are also several times during the school year when you will see your counselor in the classroom for career and college seminars, at special functions, and for course selection.
   

  WHAT ABOUT CONFIDENTIALITY?

  What you say to a counselor in confidence will remain between you and the counselor. Are there any exceptions? Yes, a counselor might, with your knowledge or consent, decide to talk to someone else about your concern if there seems to be an immediate danger to your life, or welfare, or to someone else. Your best bet is to discuss confidentiality with your counselor and establish the "ground rules" at the beginning of your conference.
   

   

  HOW CAN A COUNSELOR HELP?

  1.      By Listening - When you lose someone close, make a big mistake, are faced with an important decision, feel confused about drugs, are not getting along with someone special, or feel down without knowing why.
  2.      By Advising - When you are selecting courses, choosing a career, looking for training or a job after high school, trying to find tips for improving your schoolwork.
  3.      By Interpreting - When you receive scores from tests like the ASVAB, PSAT, SAT, ACT or when you want to review your cumulative school file.
  4.      By Informing - When you need facts about graduation requirements, future careers, college admission, student rights and responsibilities.
  5.      By Mediating - When you need a third person with an objective view to help you resolve a problem with a friend, teacher, sibling, parent, or employer.
  6.      By Referring - When you need assistance from an agency in the community
