WHS Senior Vincent Hoang Named Commended Student in National Merit Scholarship Program; Achieves Perfect Score on ACT
Washington High School senior Vincent Hoang has been named a Commended Student in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from WHS and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, recently was presented by Principal Dr. Eric Turner to Hoang.
Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2024 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2024 competition by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” said a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
Hoang achieved a score of 36 on the ACT, which is the maximum score. Out of the 1.9 million students who take the test every year, only about 3,700 get the highest possible ACT score. This elusive perfect score places Hoang at the top of millions of high school students who take the test.
Vincent is the son of Vinh Hoang and Thu Ngo. He is involved in orchestra, scholar bowl, chess club, soccer and Mu Alpha Theta. Following graduation, Vincent plans on attending Washington University in St. Louis. He’s undecided on what his major will be, possibly physics or computer science.
