Washington High School scholar bowl sent two teams to the Webster Groves Statesman Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 25.
There were 18 total teams in attendance, which were sorted into three preliminary groups. The top two teams from each group advanced to the playoffs.
The Washington A team defended its title from last year by winning the tournament.
In the prelims, Washington A went 5-0 with wins over Oakville B, DeSmet, Sullivan B, Hannibal and Parkway West. Washington A advanced to the playoffs along with Parkway West.
Washington B went 1-4, winning over Jackson B, and dropping to Francis Howell, Parkway South A, Sullivan A and Parkway North. That placed them fifth in their bracket, and into the lower consolation bracket.
In consolation, Washington B went 2-2 with wins over DeSmet and Sullivan C to finish in 15th place overall. Team members were Silas Clements, Rachel Derner, and Elijah Uffman.
In the playoffs, Washington A defeated Sullivan A 315-95, and led Parkway South A at the half, but a comeback led Parkway South to a 10-point win on the last question, 215-205.
Washington responded with a tough win over Parkway South C and then defeated Rolla to end the playoff bracket at 4-1.
Meanwhile, Parkway South lost to Rolla and Parkway West, and Parkway West had also beaten Rolla. So after the dust settled, Washington and Parkway West were tied at the top of the bracket, with Rolla and Parkway South tied for third, Sullivan A was fifth and Parkway South C was sixth.
To break the tie, Washington played Parkway West in a winner-take-all final game, which Washington won 450-110.
This was the first tournament win for Washington since last year's JV State, and means that Washington defended its title from this same tournament last year.
Team members for Washington were Kyle Meyer, Audrey Bush (10th-place scorer from prelims) and Samantha Doepker (second-place scorer from prelims).
