Playing its first game at the new Fields at South Point, the Washington High School baseball squad celebrated the event with a 3-0 varsity victory over Union on Tuesday, March 28.
Grant Trentmann tossed a two-hit shutout for the Blue Jays, registering eight strikeouts over seven innings while walking two.
Washington (5-3) collected three hits and made them count.
Ryan Weidle put the Blue Jays on top in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI double, scoring his brother Jacob Weidle, who reached on a walk.
Washington added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to increase the lead to 3-0. Ben Loesing and Aden Pecka scored the runs on a throwing error and a sacrifice fly ball by Hanon Jarvis.
Ethan Stellhorn and Weston Meyer joined Ryan Weidle as Blue Jays with one hit. Hayden Burns, Sam Paule, Jacob Weidle and Pecka each drew a walk.
Washington, coached by Dane Gough, opened the season by going 3-2 at the Troy Tournament, losing its first two games to Francis Howell 6-2 and Parkway West 9-5, but bounced back with wins over Timberland 14-13, Hannibal 8-3 and Seckman 2-1.
The Blue Jays have also split a double-header with Troy this season, winning 3-2 and losing 6-1.
