Picking up where they left off last season, the Washington High School Blue Jays opened their varsity football season with a 54-13 victory at Union on Friday, Aug. 28.
It was a dominating performance for the Blue Jays, who posted a 9-2 record last season and look for a similar performance this year.
Washington (1-0) accumulated over 500 yards of offense, scoring seven rushing touchdowns and one defensive score, a 45-interception return by Ryan Hoerstkamp.
Leading the ground attack was Dylan Pape, who carried the ball nine times for 133 yards and scored four touchdowns. He had touchdown runs of 2, 13, 16 and 62 yards.
Cole Nahlik rushed for two touchdowns, including a 94-yard run early in the game for the Blue Jays’ first score. He also had a three-yard touchdown run.
Louis Paule added a one-yard touchdown run.
Cam Millheiser directed Washington’s offense as the starting quarterback.
Washington’s defense figures to be solid this season, led by returning starters defensive ends Hoerstkamp and Trevor Buhr, along with safety Luke Kroeter.
The Blue Jays have their home opener Friday, Sept. 4, against Pacific (0-1) at 7 p.m.
