Washington Volleyball Wins Home Opener Over Ft. Zumwalt South
It was a successful home opener all the way around for the Washington High School volleyball program.
Playing against GAC Central foe Ft. Zumwalt South, the Lady Jays defeated FZS in the freshman, junior varsity and varsity matches on Thursday, Aug. 30.
In the varsity match, Washington dropped the first game, but dominated the next two in a 17-25, 25-7, 25-5 victory.
“I think the girls had a few home-opener jitters to start things out. They were excited to be playing at home and probably tried to do too much,” said Washington Head Coach Susan Harms. “We really put it together in the second and third games. Our offense was clicking, our defense was solid and we didn’t miss as many serves as we did in the first game.”
Harms said the Lady Jays didn’t make full rotations in the second and third games.
“We did a good job passing and our setters (Emma Zanin and Jackie Oetterer) got the ball to the people they needed to. We need to get the ball to Kassidy Phillips and Josie Kleekamp. We didn’t let them get into their offense,” Harms said. “Kassidy Phillips did a great job at the net. Josie Kleekamp, Brooke Voss and Kate Freitag all had long serving runs. Taylor Bauer, Josie Kleinheider and Lacey Jaycox all attacked the ball well. When we’re on, I think we’re a tough team to beat. We’re not big, but we’re quick and athletic.”
Washington opened its varsity season with a loss at Marquette and a conference win at Timberland before taking consolation honors at the Borgia Tournament on August 25.
