Softball Lady Jays Blast Ft. Zumwalt North
Playing at home for the first time this season, the Washington High School varsity softball team cruised to an 11-3 GAC Central victory over Ft. Zumwalt North on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Lakeview Park.
Washington’s junior varsity squad also won by the same 11-3 score over Ft. Zumwalt North.
In the varsity contest, Maddie Holtmeyer pitched the first six innings for the Lady Jays to earn the victory. She allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Loren Thurmon pitched a perfect seventh inning.
Washington collected 12 hits in the game, scoring four runs in both the bottom of the third and fourth innings to grab an 8-1 advantage.
Washington added three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a three-run home run by Ashley Molitor, who finished the game with two hits and four RBIs.
Sarah Becszlko reached base three times with two hits and a walk. She also scored two runs.
Emma Vodnansky also was on base three times with two hits (one double) and a walk to go with four RBIs and three runs.
Elizabeth Jones had two hits (one double). Denise Heggemann, Grace Landwehr, Alex Lewis and Holtmeyer each added one hit. Allie Huddleston has been a big part of the Lady Jays’ offense so far this season. Freshman Myla Inman also has seen significant playing time.
Washington’s five seniors are Ellie Quaethem, Sophia Olszowka, Becszlko, Molitor and Jones. Quaethem and Olszowka were out with injuries.
Washington is coached by Philip King, Dane Gough, Grant Young and Tim Zumsteg.
