The Washington High School varsity girls soccer team began action in the annual Blue Cat Tournament, hosted by WHS and Union, with a match against Oakville on Monday, April 24, at Washington High School.
The Lady Jays, coached by Adam Fischer, had their fair share of scoring opportunities, but could not punch one in and dropped a 1-0 decision.
Oakville scored the only goal of the game with eight seconds remaining in the first half.
Washington will look to rebound in the consolation semifinals on Wednesday, April 26, against Rock Bridge, who also lost a 1-0 decision to Ft. Zumwalt West. The final day of the tournament is Friday, April 28.
The Lady Jays started the season with four straight victories, winning the Warrenton Tournament and then knocking off Father Tolton in their home opener, 3-2, which was one of their best victories of the season.
Washington’s biggest win so far this season came at Liberty on April 18, where the Lady Jays defeated the Eagles, 4-1. Liberty is annually one of the top teams in the GAC Central and beat Washington earlier in the season.
Washington has a young team this season with just two seniors and four juniors on the varsity roster. There are seven sophomores and five freshmen on the varsity roster. The team’s two seniors are Maci Rohlfing and Maddie Grimes.
The Lady Jays have some tough losses in conference play this season, but hope that will prepare them for the Class 3 District 5 Tournament May 13-20 at Rolla High School.
