Washington High School Scholar Bowl claimed the Class 5 District 3 championship at North Point High School on Saturday, April 13. It is Washington’s first district title since 2020, when that team finished second at the state competition.
Team members on this year’s team were seniors Vincent Hoang and Hayden Ley, junior Alina Hayden and sophomore and Nathan Oreskovic.
Oreskovic took the top individual player award with 9.5 tossups per game in the preliminaries.
There were seven teams in the district, which were each given three preliminary games assigned by random draw. The top teams by record and then points scored advanced to the semifinals in the afternoon.
Washington, coached by David Dennis, drew the No.7 spot, which gave it a first round bye, which counted as a win for records. In round 2, Washington defeated Warrenton, 510-120. In round 3, Washington defeated Union, 660-0.
That left the seeding for the afternoon as Washington first (3-0), Holt second (3-0), Sullivan third (2-1), and Ft. Zumwalt South fourth (2-1).
In the semifinals, Holt squeezed past Sullivan by 70 points while Washington topped Ft. Zumwalt South, 570-130.
The finals were clinched with seven tossups to go as Washington went on to win the final over Holt, 480-150.
District winners move on to face each other in a best two of three sectional match on Tuesday, April 23. Washington, the District 3 champion, travels to Mexico High School, the District 4 champion. The winner advances to state during the first weekend of May.
There are national rankings of quiz bowl teams, and the most recent ones came out on Sunday, April 14. Washington currently is ranked No. 201 in the country, which is eighth in the state. Mexico is No. 13 in the country, first in the state.
