High school students from Marbach, Germany, Washington’s sister city, arrived in town for a visit on April 9 and will stay until April 23.
The itinerary for the Marbach students is full of many different activities and events. They were at Washington High School on April 11 and will return for another visit on April 22.
There were 15 students and two teachers from Marbach who made the trip. They stayed with host families from Washington and Borgia High Schools.
While at WHS, the students arrived as the school day began and met with all the WHS students who are taking German classes. There was an informal welcoming party in German instructor Sarah Johnson’s classroom.
WHS Assistant Principal Shawn Wallace then took the Marbach students on a tour of the high school. The WHS students in German classes, along with Johnson, tagged along on the tour of the building.
“The Marbach students were absolutely fascinated to see the weight room and the ROTC room. In Germany, those sorts of classes do not exist,” Johnson said. “If German students want to play music in school, they do so as part of a club after school. They loved the football field and were taking many photos of it.”
Beginning in third hour, the Marbach students paired up with a WHS student taking a German class and shadowed them to all of their classes for the remainder of the day.
After school, the group went to the fire house, took a tour of the facility, and met with some of the Washington fire fighters.
Some of the other things the visitors did or will do during the visit was visit Borgia High School and Washington City Hall, travel to Hermann, go to St. Louis to see the Arch and the city museum, and visit Meramec Caverns and Sports Fusion.
