For the second straight season, the Washington High School girls wrestling team captured a district championship.
Competing at the MSHSAA Class 1 District 2 Tournament at North Point High School in Wentzville on Saturday and Sunday, February 5 and 6, the Lady Jays edged Holt for the team championship with 146 points. Holt finished with 145 points while Francis Howell Central (138.5), Brookfield (110) and St. Charles (102) rounded out the top five.
Five Lady Jays advanced to the MSHSAA Wrestling Championships by placing in the top four of their respective weight classes. The state wrestling tournament is scheduled for Thursday-Saturday, February 17-19, at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.
Representing Washington at the girls state wrestling meet will be Annelise Obermark, Julia Donnelly, Shelby Whitacre, Kendra Bliss and Paytin Welsh.
Obermark, a sophomore, won the district title at 135 pounds in dominating fashion, winning by pin fall in all five of her matches for a 5-0 district record, improving her overall record to 40-8.
Donnelly, a junior, placed second at 110 pounds with a 3-1 district record, improving to 34-6 on the season.
Whitacre, a senior, placed third at 174 pounds with a 6-1 district record, improving to 28-9 on the season.
Bliss, a sophomore, placed fourth at 120 pounds with a 3-2 district record, improving to 48-3 on the season.
Welsh, a junior, placed fourth at 194 pounds with a 3-2 district record, improving to 20-12 on the season.
Also competing for Josh Ohm’s Lady Jays at the district meet and contributing to the team title were Nina Zimmermann (105 pounds), Ava Griffey (115), Stella Secor (125), Lindsay Sprung (130), Brianna James (141), Maggie Ortmann (149) and Kristin Sprung (159).
