St. Louis Cardinals Pitcher Kyle Gibson Visits South Point Elementary
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Kyle Gibson visited South Point Elementary to speak to students on Friday, January 12. Students were divided into three groups according to grade.
Gibson, who played college baseball at the University of Missouri, signed a free agent contract with the Cardinals on November 21. He gave a motivational speech to the South Point Elementary students that incorporated life lessons on how to be a good person and a good friend, and how to use essential skills in everyday life.
Gibson is known in the baseball world as a player who is very involved in community work. He has continued to serve communities in various ways throughout his career. He is a three-time Roberto Clemente Award nominee and was the recipient of the 2017 Carl R. Pohlad Community Service Award, selected by the Minnesota Twins Community Fund Board of Directors. He also serves as the Vice President of former Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright’s Big League Impact charitable foundation.
Gibson, 36, spent last season with the Baltimore Orioles, going 15-9 with a 4.73 earned-run average in 33 starts. After spending the first seven years of his career with the Minnesota Twins, the veteran pitcher is joining his fourth team in four years. He’s also played for the Texas Rangers and Philadelphia Phillies. Overall, he's 104-100 with a 4.54 career ERA in 11 seasons.
