Mason Kauffeld, a sophomore at Washington High School, has qualified for the MSHSAA Swimming Championships, becoming the school’s first-ever state qualifier in boys swimming.
Kauffeld qualified in the 200 IM (Individual medley) with a time of 2:09.45. He will compete in the Class 1 State Championships Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9 and 10, at the Rec-Plex in St. Peters.
“I am honored and happy to be the first boy from Washington High School to qualify for state,” Kauffeld said. “I told my mom at the beginning of the season that I really wanted to get to state. I had a few tough spots along the way. It definitely was a process. But I made it and was able to accomplish my goal.”
It’s been a busy fall sports season for Kauffeld, who also is a member of the WHS cross country team.
“I think doing two sports really helped me improve at both,” Kauffeld said. “I enjoyed doing both of them. I like challenges, and it was definitely a challenge. But I got used to it.”
Washington High School will have a state send-off assembly for Kauffeld on Thursday, Nov. 8.
