Jamie Berkel - Teacher Proud HighlightThe School District of Washington is excited to take part in the “STL Teacher Proud” campaign, put on by Education Plus, as an effort to highlight the amazing teachers who choose to serve the St. Louis community and inspire others to join the noble profession of teaching. On the second Tuesday of each month, we’ll highlight a SDOW teacher who chooses to make a difference every day.

Teacher Proud Tuesday – Jamie Berkel, Special Education Teacher, Clearview Elementary

Jamie Berkel has been with the School District of Washington for two years as a special education teacher. She’s been in education for six years. She taught in Seattle, Wash., and Daphne, Ala., prior to her time at Washington due to her husband Ben being in the military. Jamie and Ben both grew up in St. Clair.

“As a teacher, I feel like I have the opportunity to experience a diverse world and help each student feel welcomed and loved no matter what their socio economic background is including their abilities and disabilities. I have the chance every day to really influence someone else’s life,” Berkel said. “I get the opportunity to have a student that feels overwhelmed and frustrated by school and help them to see how much they can truly do and allow them to see themselves as being successful. Every day I get to watch students find their spark and interest and help them understand they are smart and capable of learning, no matter their ability. As a teacher, I feel like I have a deep sense of pride and accomplishment in what I get to do every day.

“Clearview is home for me. I work with an amazing team of supporting staff and educators, all of whom are committed and dedicated to bettering the lives of our students. Each teacher has a strong commitment to fostering and nurturing an inclusive learning environment,” Berkel said. “Clearview has a strong emphasis on cultivating a positive school culture that promotes kindness and diversity. I am so thankful to be a part of their team.”

“Mrs. Berkel does an outstanding job in working to meet the varied needs of her special education students. She collaborates well within our building SPED team, with our grade level teachers, and students’ families. Her calm demeanor and patience go a long way in assisting her students to be successful,” said Clearview Elementary Principal Dr. Matt Busekrus. “Mrs. Berkel is always positive, which contributes to our efforts in ensuring we have a positive climate and culture at Clearview. We are fortunate to have her as a part of our Clearview team and for her to be recognized for her efforts.”
