The School District of Washington’s Horizons Academy recently was certified as a
“Promising Practice” by Character.org, a national advocate and leader for character in schools and communities.
A total of 152 Promising Practices throughout the United States were certified.
"We are extremely proud to recognize the schools and organizations that have developed and implemented a Promising Practice,” said Dr. Arthur Schwartz, President of Character.org. “Each of these programs and initiatives have demonstrated significant impact and strongly align with the principles that help schools and organizations cultivate a culture of character.”
This year’s character development practices and initiatives included peer mentoring, service-learning, and conflict resolution approaches. Many of the Promising Practices also involve parents and the local community.
Character.org will honor each 2022 Promising Practice recipient (schools and organizations) at its National Forum to be held October 19-20, 2022.

Horizons Academy is a Pathway to Employment Program located at Four Rivers Career Center. This foundational class is offered to exceptional students with a variety of educational barriers in order to focus on an integrated career and technical education curriculum.
“The Horizons Academy is a perfect example of what it means to elevate educational experiences for our students with exceptionalities. Rooted in the Blue Jay way, (respect, ownership, commitment and kindness) our students with disabilities have the opportunity to put the values into practice with real world opportunities that prepare them for life after high school,” said Wendy Turnbough, SDOW Director of Special Services.
“The Horizons Academy has partnered with community members, local business, the City of Washington, and district buildings to provide students with disabilities the opportunity to explore their workforce and personal passions. Since the beginning of the program, the partnerships within the community have been growing and allowing for students to exhibit their personal character skills of giving back. As a result of the relationships, our students have explored and promoted the values in the workplace while making a true impact in our community.”
