The historic bell from the old Fifth Street Elementary now has a new home at the Washington Historical Society Museum.
When Fifth Street Elementary closed following the 2014-15 school year, not only did the students re-locate to Washington West Elementary, but the bell did as well.
The large and heavy bell recently moved again, this time re-locating to the Washington Historical Society, where it will be displayed as a piece of history from Washington and an item that will give past staff and students something to remember the school.
Fifth Street School was built in 1938.
Many former students remember the stage that used to be located inside Fifth Street School’s gymnasium. Class pictures were taken there, and annual pageants were held there too.
The two-story building was located at 100 West Fifth Street across from the city library. The enrollment at the time it closed was approximately 120 students.
The Washington Historical Society Museum is located at 113 East Fourth Street at the corner of Fourth and Market Streets.
