Family Reading NightLet’s get together and READ! The Community Literacy Foundation, in partnership with the School District of Washington, Washington Public Library and Friends of the Library, and the Washington Optimist Club, will host Family Reading Night on Friday, March 3, at Washington Middle School.

Additionally, the School District of Washington’s Parent Summit Series event for March is a partnership with Family Reading Night.

The program kicks off at 6 p.m. with picture book author and illustrator Colter Jackson sharing her book, “Rhino Suit,” a story of a young girl who feels things so deeply, she builds a tough-skinned rhino suit for protection. But she discovers that to feel the good, it’s important to learn ways to deal with the not-so-good.

Jackson’s book was a Community Literacy Foundation’s Book Buddy Pick in May 2022 and can be found in area school and public libraries. Learn more about the book at https://www.boundtoreadblog.com/post/feelings-just-are.

Family Reading Night will feature stories in reading rooms, activity tables hosted by area school PTO organizations, refreshments and book giveaways. The Washington Police Department will share a skit at the end of the evening based on a book.

Organizations and individuals interested in donating book baskets to give away at Family Reading Night may contact Penny Heisel at [email protected].

Families who read together the week before Family Reading Night will have the opportunity to bring their reading logs to enter into a drawing for gift certificates provided through a donation from the Washington High School Football Team.

Family Reading Night is a free family event for all ages. Additional support for this event is provided by Neighborhood Reads Bookstore and Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of New Haven.
