Staff and members from Franklin County Country Club raised money and donated to the School District of Washington’s Backpack Program. The donation was in the amount of $1,330.
The Backpack Program is to provide food to students experiencing hunger during the weekend, when school breakfast and lunch is unavailable.
The program provides food to students throughout the entire school year and extending through the summer months, while school is not in session.
Franklin County Country Club representatives Kelly Konczal and Ashley Mercer presented the check to Missouri Options students, who help pack food at Loving Hearts Outreach, Michelle Crider of Loving Hearts, and School District of Washington Social Worker Lindsey Jasper.
A child can be referred to the Backpack Program by any school employee or by request of their parent/guardian.
Students referred are homeless, show signs of hunger, are eligible for free/reduced food service, are ineligible for free/reduced food service, but miss the cut off by a small amount, and/or continually show a negative balance on their lunch account.
Students showing signs of hunger may have frequent visits to the nurse, rush to the lunch line, ask for left overs, ask for a second tray and may show emotional signs of anxiety, stress, irritability, lethargy, headaches and stomach aches.
