Brock Thompson, a junior at Washington High School, is the new student adviser for the School District of Washington’s Board of Education. He was sworn in during the January 17 meeting.
Thompson replaces Blake Deppe as the student adviser to the Board. The terms are for one year.
Interested student candidates recently went through an application and interview process with administration prior to being selected by the high school student body.
“I am extremely excited to become the next school board rep because I'll be able to work with the school board to help improve our district,” Thompson said. “I became interested in the opportunity when I wanted to get more involved in our school district through the various leadership positions like the school board rep and class president.”
Brock is highly involved with different clubs and groups at Washington High School, including National Honor Society, Student Council and Mu Alpha Theta. He’s been his class president for the last two school years and is a member of the Junior Fair Board.
“My favorite class at WHS was my sophomore year when I had Mr. (Clint) Schneider for psychology and sociology. That was my favorite class because I learned a lot of cool things about psychology and how it connects to the real world,” Thompson said. “The best part of being a student at WHS is that we have a lot great students and staff that make going to high school a more memorable and fun time.”
Deppe, is his final meeting as student representative, was recognized by the Board of Education for his year of service.
The student adviser is expected to attend all regular board meetings, give student adviser reports, and may be asked to report on particular issues. The adviser also is expected to communicate with students throughout the district on a regular basis.
The student adviser does not sit in on executive sessions or is privy to any confidential information.
Brock is the son of Angie Boercker and Travis Thompson. When asked about his plans after high school, Brock said he would like to start his own business and invest in real estate.
