BOE Recognizes Doepker, Scholar Bowl

BOE RecognitionDuring their monthly meeting on Wednesday, December 15, the School District of Washington’s Board of Education recognized Washington High School senior Samantha Doepker, who was named a Commended Student in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program, and the WHS Scholar Bowl team, who captured second-place state honors during the MSHSAA Class 6 Championships on May 8 in Columbia.

The Board presented each of the students with a certificate of achievement and a gift bag full of treats.

WHS Scholar Bowl Places Second

The Washington High School Scholar Bowl team reached the state finals by winning the Class 6 District 2 meet in April and then defeating Oakville in the sectional round.

At the state event, the Blue Jays cruised to a semifinal victory over Ft. Zumwalt North, 410-170, to advance to the state championship match. In the other semifinal, Raymore-Peculiar edged St. Joseph Central in overtime, 371-370.

In the championship contest, Washington lost to Raymore-Peculiar, 440-210. Washington placed second out of 44 Class 6 teams in Missouri.

Washington’s starters were captain Katlynn Miller, Samantha Doepker, Kyle Meyer and Vincent Hoang.

Alternates who played at districts and/or the state semifinal match were Hayden Ley, Grace Nuckolls, Cameron Schenkel and Aidan VanLeer. Additional team members were Austin Gober, Victor Hoang, Brian Martin and Jobe Weber.

The Washington High School Scholar Bowl team is coached by David Dennis.

Samantha Doepker Commended Student

Washington High School senior Samantha Doepker was named a Commended Student in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they did not continue in the 2022 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2022 competition by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Samantha is the daughter of Joel and Lynda Doepker. She’s President of Scholar Bowl, Interact and Mu Alpha Theta, Vice-President of Gay-Straight Alliance and is a member of National Honor Society.

Samantha, who holds a 4.0 grade-point average, plans to attend a four-year college following graduation, but hasn’t decided where. She’s already been accepted to the University of Missouri. She’s leaning toward going into the computer science field.
