The School District of Washington is excited to take part in the “STL Teacher Proud” campaign, put on by Education Plus, as an effort to highlight the amazing teachers who choose to serve the St. Louis community and inspire others to join the noble profession of teaching. On the second Tuesday of each month, we’ll highlight a SDOW teacher who chooses to make a difference every day.
Teacher Proud Tuesday – Travis Tompson, Science Teacher, Washington Middle School
Travis Tompson has been with the School District of Washington for six years, all at Washington Middle School, and in education for eight years. He previously was a teacher at Holy Cross Academy in Webster Groves for two years. He’s a graduate of West Plains High School and Central Methodist University.
"I enjoy teaching science because it provides me my own personal avenue to attempt to understand the world around us, while also engaging students through that passion. While the main topics stay the same year to year, the way people in the world evolve science daily is fascinating to me. That fascination is a springboard for lessons in class, trying to get students to realize the content we learn in class drives the world they live in,” Tompson said. “I enjoy the middle school so much because the students are still at that age of curiosity and enhancing that curiosity for them makes each day something they, and I, can look forward to. Science should be fun, and with middle school, no day is boring.”
“Mr. Tompson engages students in their learning with high quality lessons that include real world connections. He is always willing to go above and beyond for his students and our school,” said Washington Middle School Principal Laura Bruckerhoff. “He has embraced being a co-student council sponsor and one of our track coaches. He spends time building solid, caring relationships with his students and staff members. Mr. Tompson is a valuable part of our WMS teaching team and we are pleased to have him here.”
