About the Social Studies Department
As educators in the field of history/social studies, we want our students to understand the complexity of the social, economic and political world in which we live in. We want them to know their rights and responsibilities as American citizens. We want them to understand the meaning of the Constitution as a social contract that defines our democratic government and guarantees our individual rights. We want them to take active roles as citizens and to know how to work for change in a democratic society. We want them to understand the value, the importance, and the fragility of democratic institutions. We want them to develop a keen sense of ethics and citizenship. And we want them to care deeply about the quality of life in their community, their nation, and their world.
The Social Studies Department offers a program with levels in AP and College Preparatory. The AP level includes AP European History AP and AP United States History. The College Preparatory level includes World Cultures, World History, United States History, American Government and Economics. Additional classes using SDAIE are offered in World Cultures, World History, United States History, and Government/Economics.
The Social Studies Department has one interdisciplinary courses. The 11th and 12th grade course is the Media Academy Experience (MAX). This academic academy connects curriculum in 11th and 12th grade Social Studies, English, and Media Technology.
