Dear Students and Parents:

We would like to welcome you to 8th Grade Physical Science.  We are excited to be working with you this year and have planned a fun-filled year of exploration and investigation as we begin our transition to Next Generation Science Standards.  We are committed to making this year a productive and successful experience for each of you.  We are available before school, during lunch, or after school for extra help.  Below, you will find valuable information on policies and expectations for our 8th Grade classes.

Curriculum:
8th Grade Science
•    Astronomy – Earth’s Place in the Universe
•    Earth & Human Activity
•    Energy
•    Engineering Design
•    Motion and Stability: Forces & Interactions
•    Scientific Methods – The Way Scientists Gather Data
•    Waves & Their Applications in Technologies for Information Transfer

Strategies:
Each topic will be addressed as one or more units.  Most units will contain the following components:
    *Hands-on Experiences            *Writing and Drawing
    *Reading                    *Assessments (test, quiz, project)

Classroom Expectations:
1)    Respect EVERY PERSON in the room.  This includes:
~following directions the FIRST TIME
~contributing to an environment in which all students can learn
~using school property properly and ONLY as instructed
2)    Be in your seat copying the homework into your agenda BEFORE the tardy bell rings and remain in your seat until directions to do otherwise are given (this includes dismissal).
3)    Have ALL materials with you EVERY day (please see list below).
4)    All school rules will be enforced and consequences followed.

Materials and Supplies - EACH DAY, PLEASE BRING THE FOLLOWING TO CLASS:
•    Two sharp pencils with erasers, blue/black pen, small pencil sharpener. Work in anything other than pencil, blue or black ink will need to be redone.
•    Correcting pen (red, green, purple, pink etc.)
•    A binder or section of a binder with 3 dividers for science (see details below)
•    Lined Binder Paper – at least 10 blank pieces at all times
•    Student Agenda
•    Higlighters (2-3)
Science Binder Set-up:  Your science binder should be set up to include 5 dividers.  The dividers will be labeled as follows:  1) Important Papers 2) Do Now   3) CW/HW

*PLEASE KEEP ALL SCIENCE PAPERS!  Completed work will be revisited throughout the year and will be needed for our final project.  We will clean out binders in class.

Classwork/Homework:
Students are responsible for recording all class assignments and homework in their agenda EVERY DAY.  Please check this with your student daily to ensure comprehension and task completion. Homework assignments and upcoming project information will be available on School Loop. Check the website often for information.

Late Work:
Assignments are due at the beginning of the period on the due date.  All work is expected to be completely ready to hand in at the beginning of the period (stapled, complete name/heading, etc.). Work will not be accepted late for full credit.  Work will not be accepted after the assignment has been graded and passed back to students.

Absences:
In the case of an excused absence the student will have the number of days of the absence to make up the work without penalty.  The student is responsible for getting the assignment from the absent binder the day he/she returns to school at a time that does not disrupt the class.  Depending on the activity missed, students will need to arrange a time to do a make up with his/her teacher.  Some activities may require several lunches or an hour after school.  For labs we will have an alternate assignment OR a make up time set and it is the responsibility of the student to be present at that time.
PLEASE NOTE: STUDENTS ARE NOT EXCUSED FROM DOING ASSIGNMENTS GIVEN ON THE DAY(S) OF AN ABSENCE.  THE LATE POLICY WILL BE APPLIED TO ABSENT WORK IF TURNED IN AFTER THE GRACE PERIOD AND STUDENTS WILL EARN A ZERO FOR ASSIGNMENTS NOT COMPLETED.

Grades:

Students will be graded on their level of mastery of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for 8th Grade.  Throughout the year, students will be given multiple opportunities to show they have a good understanding of the topics we will cover.  The evidence the student provides will be through written work, participation, completion of labs/projects, and short quizzes.

Textbooks:  Due to our transition to NGSS, students will not be given a text book to use at home but will be provided with a variety of readings in the form of packets and articles.

Rewards:
Students in an attentive class will have a better understanding of material and concepts covered, setting them up for success and a more positive experience in science.  Students and classes that choose to follow the rules will be rewarded.  Throughout class periods each class can earn class points towards a reward.

Consequences:
Students who choose to break any classroom or school rule will earn consequences in accordance with the Davidson Middle School Discipline Policy (please see student agenda).

Thank you for reading the 8th Grade Science Class Expectations.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Please complete and sign the slip below.  Before signing, please make sure to go over the daily materials, late work and absence policies.  The Class Expectations will be kept in the student’s binder for easy access.
