Mr. Gorkowski and his Beginning Building Trades class.

My first year of teaching is going by quickly and it's hard to believe that parent/teacher conferences are coming up October 22nd. We got through homecoming and I've participated in my first parade by driving the junior class float through town.

Building Trades runs on a schedule a little different from other high school classes.  My morning group meets 2nd through 4th blocks and consists of four students, all of whom have some prior building experience. They afternoon group of six meets from 6th through 8th blocks and also has previous experience.  We have been working on siding a garage, putting in some wiring, and adding a door opener and some stairs.  We have a few possible future projects in the works as well and are waiting to hear back from some home owners before we can set up a timetable.  During 5th block I have a group of 14 students in Beginning Building Trades whose main focus is learning safe tool operation and some of the beginning aspects of construction.  We've tested on tool safety and spent time practicing the operation of all of the standard power tools we use in the shop.  Next we practiced the skills they're learning by having pairs of students build an L shaped wall which they've now joined together to build what will eventually be chicken coops.

If you have any concerns about your student, please contact me at extensions 557 or 558 at school 8-9:00 a.m. during my planning period.  Otherwise, I hope to meet with you and your student during conferences on the 22nd.
