How do I find out who my MVMS Counselor is?

The Mill Valley Middle School Counseling Department is made up of three credentialed school counselors, one per grade level.  You will be assigned to your counselor based on your current grade level.  The best part is, your counselor will stay assigned to you throughout your three years at MVMS!

    6th Grade Counselor: Erin Sheedy - esheedy@mvschools.org
    7th Grade Counselor: Janet Jamesson - jjamesson@mvschools.org

What can my counselor help me with?
Your counselor is dedicated to assisting you with your academic, social, and emotional needs. Counseling will give you an opportunity to talk about problems you are experiencing and a space to work on problem-solving in a safe, supportive, and confidential setting. The only time a counselor must break confidentiality is if you or another person are in danger of being harmed.

    Our counseling services include:
    • Collaboration and consultation with students, teachers, families, and other providers to identify strategies to help students in areas of academic, behavior, and social-emotional well-being.
    • Serving as a resource in the area of student intervention using researched and evidence-based practices.
    • Providing personal counseling on a 1:1 basis
    • Providing conflict management between students
    • Providing targeted small-group counseling
    • Providing crisis support
    • Promoting high school, college & career readiness
    • Assisting students in scheduling matters

How can talking to my counselor be helpful?
Sometimes our feelings build up inside of us, like pressure building up in a balloon.  If we continue to let our feelings build up, what will happen?  Our “emotional balloon” will “pop.”  It is important for us to have a safe place to talk about our feelings so that we can let the pressure out of the balloon a little bit at a time.  Talking to a counselor can help you not feel so overwhelmed.  Even though your counselor may not be able to always “fix” your problems, they can give you extra support and tools to help you.

How can I meet with my counselor?
You can request counseling by dropping a paper request form into the wooden box in the counseling area, asking your counselor directly, asking your teacher, or by email.

Additionally, parents, teachers, administrators, or other students may refer you to your school counselor if they have any concerns about your academic, social, or emotional development while at Mill Valley Middle School.
