    LUNCH PROGRAM UPDATES

For the 2023-24 school year, Mill Valley School District will be partnering with LunchMaster to offer all students enrolled in the district free meals in line with California's Universal Meals Program. If you already have an account with Lunchmaster from the previous year, please UPDATE your student(s) grade BEFORE placing any orders.

Please Note: Even with free meals for the 2023-24 school year, it is still important to complete the Free and Reduced Lunch Application. These forms are currently available in English and Spanish. You can download the application from this website and submit your completed application to your school site, OR you can find a hard copy of the application at the school office. Only one application per household is needed. Completing the Free and Reduced Lunch Application may help provide the Mill Valley School District with funding and qualify students for individual benefits such as:

    • State and Federal Funding for School Budgets

    • Qualify students for individual benefits such as P-EBT Eligibility

    • Qualify students for other individual site-based benefits such as a gift certificate for the book fair, yearbook at no cost, iPad insurance at no cost, and Marin Transit bus pass for Middle School students (only)

Meals can be ordered daily, weekly, or monthly, either online or through the phone App, The LunchMaster.  To set up your account, visit The LunchMaster.  Codes for each school site are listed in red on this page.  Once your account has been created, use the same link to access the site, log in to your account, and start your order.  In order to reduce food waste and ensure that an accurate number of meals are delivered, all breakfast and lunch orders require advance ordering.  Same-day ordering is not available.  See pre-ordering timelines below.

The California Department of Education commenced no-cost breakfast and lunch meals for the 2022-23 school year pursuant to AB 130 and California Education Code § 49501.5 requiring public school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools serving students in grades K-12 to provide two meals free of charge (breakfast and lunch) during each school day to students requesting a meal, regardless of their free or reduced-priced eligibility.

As such, on March 1, 2024, the district sent a request for proposal (RFP) for 2024-25 which was posted to the MVSD website, advertised in the Marin IJ, and direct solicitations went out to vendors.

As required, the District first asked all local Marin County School Districts to provide meals. There were no responses from our Marin public schools. The district then solicited food service vendors, including the current lunch vendor.

    The following vendors were solicited:

    • Lunch is Served
    • Better 4 You Meals
    • Dee's Organic Catering
    • LunchMaster
    • SchoolFoodies (declined RFP as they do not comply with the NSLP)
    • School Nutrition Plus

The District also posted the RFP on its website so any meal vendor could access and respond if interested.  The District received three proposals in response to its RFP.    The District is obligated to award to the lowest responsible bidder, in accordance with the Public Contract Code section 20111.  Thus, a contract must be awarded to the lowest responsive bidder unless it is found that that bidder is not responsible, i.e., not qualified to do the particular work under consideration.  The word “responsible” in the context of competitive bidding statutes includes the attribute of trustworthiness as well as reference to the quality, fitness, capacity, and experience of the low bidder to satisfactorily perform the proposed work.

The lowest responsible and responsive bidder was LunchMaster.  Currently, LunchMaster also serves Larkspur Corte Madera School District, Miller Creek School District, Reed Union School District, Ross Valley School District, and Kentfield School District.

What is the cost of lunch?

There is no direct cost to any student in our school district for breakfast or lunch for this service.  The combined State and federal meal reimbursement rate is $3.155 per meal and $5.305 per meal for breakfast and lunch. This reimbursement rate must cover staff compensation for food service coordinators, meal costs, and meal equipment, including refrigeration. Therefore, the district uses funds from the general operating budget to cover the additional costs.
