As Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) students eagerly awaited outside with a sign to welcome students from Taipei Municipal Neihu Senior High School as they visited MVHS. The cultural exchange enabled the Taiwan and MVHS students to learn what education is like in the opposite country, improve their second language, and make new friends. The MVHS students in Mandarin classes were excited to welcome the 18 students and two administrators visiting the last week of April. 

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is pleased to share and congratulate the third cohort of MV Ambassadors on their graduation. The special group of community members learns behind-the-scenes information about Mt. Vernon operations and programming in eight meetings throughout the school year. MV Ambassadors are empowered with school knowledge about every department and become a resource for the community.

Congratulations to the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation Board of Trustees for receiving an Exemplary Governance Award from the Indiana School Board Association (ISBA). They received this award for 2023 at the Commendable level, which is granted to school boards that have a majority of board members with Commendable individual status. 

Ms. Ashley Gustin has been selected as the new principal of Mt. Vernon Intermediate School. Ms. Gustin comes to Mt. Vernon from South Madison Community Schools as an assistant principal at Pendleton Heights Middle School. In addition to her depth of qualifications and leadership skills, she also has experience opening an intermediate school with 1,100 students at Anderson Community Schools.

In preparation for a state audit, MVCSC is requesting parents/guardians of students in kindergarten through grade 11 to upload a new, valid Proof of Residency in Skyward Family Access during April for each student.

All students who live out-of-district and are interested in attending or are currently attending a Mt. Vernon school are also required to submit an application during either of these selected windows to attend a Mt. Vernon school during the 2024-2025 school year. If you live in any MVCSC enrollment area, you do NOT need to complete this application.

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is proud to share this year’s district winners for Teacher of the Year (TOY), Mrs. Kelsey Rusk, First Grade Teacher at Fortville Elementary, and Staff of the Year (SOY), Mrs.Tonya Brown, Behavior Tech at Mt. Comfort Elementary! Both winners were recognized at the Mt. Vernon Education Foundation’s Black and Gold Gala in early April.

The criminal justice classes are among several CTE courses that will be moving to the Hancock County Career Center when it is completed and opens two years from now.

Fortville Elementary was recently recognized by the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) for their third-grade students achieving a 95% pass rate on the IREAD test. FES is one of 242 Indiana elementary schools and one out of only three Hancock County schools to receive this recognition. The IDOE recently held a celebration at the Indiana State House to recognize and congratulate the 242 schools for receiving the IREAD Literacy Honor.

Students learning Mandarin at Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) have developed new friendships with students from high schools in Taipei, Taiwan, thanks to the class pen pal project. Being the eighth school year of students writing letters, there is hope this year to meet several of their Taiwan friends when they visit the US this spring.

Mrs. Haley Frischkorn, MVCSC English Language Coordinator, is one of three fortunate teachers in Hancock County to be selected for the Lilly Endowment Inc. Teacher Creativity Fellowship Program. This fellowship program provides a select few Indiana teachers up to $15,000 allowing them to explore new opportunities that will inspire them and help in their teaching career. The grant is to fund teachers a renewal project to be renewed in their students’ education and experiences in the classroom through their teaching. Frischkorn plans to visit notable sites in New Zealand with her family to see their imaginations come to life. She has titled this plan, “There and Back Again: A Teacher’s Tale- Reignite the imagination by journeying through Middle Earth.”

Kyla has been so successful in doing the hard work of Health Science classes over the past two years that she’s earned direct admission to the University of Cincinnati’s highly regarded nursing program, where she will enroll next fall. Kyla credits her achievement to Mt. Vernon’s rigorous, hands-on Health Science program, along with inspiring examples from her own family.

As the Mt. Vernon community continues to grow at a steady pace, so does the number of English as a New Language (ENL) learners in the schools. The ENL program at the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) supports the emergent bilingual population. The program’s goal is to ensure that students receive supplemental linguistic support during their academic journey as they learn the English language. Recently, MVCSC ENL teachers have expanded their efforts through a grant that enables them to teach the English language to adults in the community.

The Mt. Vernon High School Essential Skills Department supports students by teaching them hands-on skills learned at school and throughout various companies in the Mt. Vernon community. The goal is to help prepare these students with job skills for success in their futures. In class, the teachers will work with students up to age 22 throughout the school year to help determine the skills, interests, and preferences of the students and connect possible careers.
