Approve Minutes From April Meeting

  • Sarah Timmins motioned
  • Debbie Brough 2nd
  • All in favor

Safety Minute

  • Short announcement about digital security and data safety.

COVID-19 Response

  • The District is following state health department guidelines corresponding to the governor’s plan.
  • Administrators are already discussing what fall might look like.
  • Realistically, they have to look at plans for yellow, orange, and red safety levels in case things change before the start of school or during the school year.
  • Moving in and out of phases may be the reality.
  • The District is hoping to have the plan in place by early summer, but there aren’t yet many details that they can share at this time.
  • One parent offered feedback regarding fall planning and said that asking parents to park in the school lot to get access to WIFI is not a good solution.
  • Mr. Wagner agreed and said that in the future the schools are hoping to get hotspots that they can give out.
  • Mr. Wagner also confirmed that even though the county is going to phase yellow this weekend, school will not re-open this year.
  • One parent asked about summer school and he indicated that it is likely to happen in the school building and more information should come in the Sunday newsletter.

Data Minute Regarding CFA Proficiencies

  • The school goal is to have 90% of the students proficient on their essential learnings.
  • The data is not fully ready for the end of school, but we reviewed what was available as a group.
  • Teachers estimate about 50% participation in the current fully online environment, which will create challenges for student progress.
  • Mr. Wagner indicated that there will be 2 days of professional development in June (with 3 extra days offered) and they will be having conversations on how to launch into the next year and catch up students as needed.

Standards Based Grading

  • In general, MLMS school administration has been pleased with this change.
  • But they do see a need for adjustment.
  • The school is thinking about eliminating letter grades and translating letter grades to numbers.
  • Principal Wagner asked if people were comfortable with numeric grades.
  • One parent noted that parents will need some education via a rubric to understand what the numbers mean.
  • She also noted that within each quarter it will be hard for students to move up to a 4 if at the end of the quarter students are just starting with new material.
  • There were some concerns from other parents about whether this model might not prepare students for the way grades are handled in the high school (or then at college).
  • There were also concerns about students who might become complacent about achieving proficiency (rather than really pushing to the next level when they are capable of that level of work).

Planning For Next Year

  • Katie Chapman will email everyone to do some basic planning for next year.

Community Concern

  • If there is community concern, please email this to Katie.

Adjourn

  • Kate Twohig motioned

  • All in favor to close final meeting of the 2019-2020 school year.
