KHS Seniors Attain Awards from College and Career Center

Recognitions align with Real World Learning initiative

Kearney, Mo., May 10, 2021: Kearney kids continue to rack up the recognitions.

Kearney High School seniors Austin Bullock and Alex Moravec were selected for 2021 Early College Academy Academic Awards during a recent ceremony hosted by Metropolitan Community College-Maple Woods.

The college chooses students every year for special recognition due to their outstanding academic achievement, according to MCC-Maple Woods Campus Life and Leadership staff member Kaitlyn Kelly.

“You both did amazing outside and inside the classroom,” Ms. Kelly said in reference to Mr. Bullock and Mr. Moravec. “You serve as role models not just for your peers at the high school level but also at the college level.”

Kearney School District partners with MCC-Maple Woods to offer high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to take college classes and simultaneously earn a high school diploma and a two-year associate’s degree. KSD Early College Academy spots are available for the 2021-2022 academic year and students should talk to their high school counselor if they are interested in applying.

The Excelsior Springs Area Career Center (ESACC) recently recognized several KHS seniors for their 2021 WorkKeys assessment results. All seniors at the center are required to take these assessments, which measure foundational skills required for success in the workplace, according to the ESACC awards presentation.

“WorkKeys assessments are relevant and recognized. Many industries use it as a valuable hiring tool,” the presenter said. “Employers look for a gold or platinum certificate to ensure that students will have a smooth transition to the workplace.”
