Members focus on engaging in hands-on community service projects
Kearney, Mo., May 10, 2021: The Kearney High School Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 39 students as new members during a ceremony on May 2.
These new members were selected by the KHS chapter’s faculty council for meeting high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The chapter’s advisers are Elizabeth Mael and Mendy Salmonson.
“We are very proud to recognize these outstanding members of our student body,” Ms. Mael said. “National Honor Society members are chosen for, and then expected to continue, their exemplary contributions to the school and community.”
The National Honor Society was founded in 1921 and is the largest student organization of its kind in the U.S. Typically, KHS members will engage in a wide variety of hands-on community service projects, including “One Homeless Night” and a “Princess Ball,” according to Mael. This year, the members created welcome baskets that the high school counselors could give to new students on their first day at KHS.
Volunteer service is one of the most important pillars of chapter membership. The photo at left shows KHS chapter members participating in a 2019 project at Harvesters.
“That focus on community service really is the thing that will stick with them throughout their lives after they graduate,” Mael said. “We’ve seen our chapter alumni go on to do some truly amazing projects at a state and even national level.”
KHS chapter members also become eligible to pursue a wide range of college scholarships. So far this spring, KHS National Honor Society students have garnered scholarships worth more than $300,000, according to Mael.
