Mr. Reyes
Hello! And welcome to Dwyer Middle School! My name is Mr. Reyes, and I'm looking forward to being your music teacher! Please reach out if you have any questions about our music programs. Thanks!
Mr. Reyes has always aspired to be a music teacher ever since he was 12 years old. He majored in Music Education and received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Eastman School of Music. An avid pianist and conductor, he has performed as a soloist at Carnegie Hall and has conducted many ensembles of varying professional levels. Mr. Reyes has performed as a low brass player for various wind ensembles, and has sang as a baritone for several choral groups throughout his musical career.
His first five years (2010-2015) of service as a credentialed music teacher was in a school in Rochester, NY. He’s since shared his passion for music with students of various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, empowering them through music-making! He found himself a great match with HBCSD after moving from New York to California in 2015. He initially taught at Eader and Smith elementary before moving full-time to be the band & choir director at Ethel Dwyer MS. Since 2016, he’s led Dwyer’s Vocal Ensemble (formerly Chamber Choir) to seven consecutive all-superior ratings in their vocal and sight-reading performances for their SCVA choral festivals (2017-2023), a first-place finish with gold ratings in their 2019 Heritage Festival, and earning four invitations to perform at the CMEA All-State Choral Festival (between 2019-2023). Dwyer's Choirs have also been invited to participate in the Nationals for Top Choirs hosted by Choirs of America at Carnegie Hall, New York City, in 2022. Mr. Reyes also led Dwyer's Ripple Effect Show Choir to a 1st place finish in the 2022 SCVA Show Choir Spectacular held at Hart High School in Santa Clarita. Ripple Effect won 1st place in the 2023 Encore Show Choir competition, against rivals Luther Burbank MS.
He co-conducted Wind Ensemble (Dwyer's advanced band) when they received all-superior ratings in their SCSBOA Festival of 2017. In 2021, Wind Ensemble participated in the Virtual Festivals by SCSBOA and received unanimous superior ratings. Wind Ensemble took home first place, with gold ratings, at their 2022 Heritage Festival in San Diego and earned an invitation to the 2023 Festival of Gold in Nashville. Wind Ensemble received unanimous superior ratings at their 2023 SCSBOA Festival and have recently been invited to participate in the Nationals for Band & Orchestra hosted by WorldStrides at Carnegie Hall, New York City, in 2024.
Outside of teaching, he enjoys spending time with his wife & daughter, picking up new illusions as an amateur magician, and watching Manchester United Football Club games.
