Environmental Science

Course description

The environmental science course incorporates many stimulating lessons, projects, labs, and activities that teach students how to understand and care for their environment. This is a year long elective course for 7th and 8th graders only. Topics covered include classification of species, biodiversity, human impact, sustainability, environmental hazards, and more! Students also have the opportunity to participate in off campus clean-ups and field trips. You can find more information regarding the overnight field trips below. 

Application process

To successfully apply for the environmental science elective course, there are a few steps.

  1. Paper student application - click here to print. Make sure your application is legible and complete. 
  2. Online teacher recommendation - click here to copy the link and send it to your science teacher. 
  3. Make sure to follow up with your teacher, as your application is not complete/accepted without this recommendation. Turn in your paper student application to Mrs. Camps (Cortes) in room 404.

Field trips

The environmental science class participates in two over night field trips during the school year. Students' academic performance and behavior in all of their classes does affect their ability to participate in the trips. Costs of the field trip include transportation, lodging, meals every day, and amazing activities.

CATALINA ISLAND

Sunrise hike in Catalina

This is a 3-day overnight trip where students learn about the classification of marine species, and their adaptations. Some of the amazing activities include snorkeling, labs, touch tanks, dissection, and more. The cost for this trip is between $350 - $400 and changes year to year. This field trip takes place mid October, with the total payment due shortly after the beginning of the school year.

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK

Entrance on Yosemite Valley

This is a 6 day overnight trip where students study the biodiversity, conservation, and beauty of Yosemite National Park. Students participate in daily guided hikes and they explore different species, waterfalls, rock formations, and the effects of wildfires. The cost for this trip is between $950-$1,100 and changes year to year. This field trip typically takes place in May, with the deposit due by January and the final payment due mid March.
