Period 1: Your book is due on Friday! Tomorrow is the last day to work in class.
Period 4: There was some confusion regarding the homework assignment, so I will write out all the details here.
Start a new sheet of wide lined paper.
You will be using the first 5 sentences of the worksheet on apostrophes.
1. Carefully copy the original sentence.
2. Next to the sentence, write C if the sentence is correct. Write IC if the sentence is incorrect.
3. If the sentence is incorrect, rewrite the sentence correctly. If the sentence is already correct, do not rewrite the sentence.
4. For all sentences, write the number of the rule that explains the correct punctuation (rules are listed below).
5. Then write what the meaning of the part of the sentence that has the apostrophe. (examples below)
RULES:
#1-make a singular noun possessive by adding 's
#2-if the singular noun already ends in an s, still add 's
#3-make a plural noun possessive by ading just an apostrophe
#4 -make both nouns possessive if the sentence says that there are 2 people that each own something...(Angela's and Tommy's reports were typed.)
#5-make only the last noun possessive if the sentence says that there are 2 people who together own something...(Angela and Tommy's house is in Glendale.)
#6-in a contraction, an apostrophe replaces the letter (s) that get removed.
Examples: Student answers will show in pink. My notations will be shown in blue.
EXAMPLE A: The student's handwriting was very hard to read. (Original sentence is on the worksheet)
(C) The student's handwriting was very hard to read. (Copy the original sentence. Write (C) if the sentence is correct, and (IC) if it is incorrect.)
#1 the handwriting belongs to the student (Rule #1 is the one that explains why the apostrophe is correct. The explanation shows the meaning of the possessive part of the sentence.)
EXAMPLE B: The racehorses legs were strong and muscular. (Original sentence is on the worksheet)
(IC) The racehorses legs were strong and muscular. (Copy the original sentence. Write (C) if the sentence is correct, and (IC) if it is incorrect.)
The racehorses' legs were strong and muscular. (The sentence was incorrect, so rewrite the sentence correctly.)
#3 the legs belong to the racehorses (Rule #3 is the one that explains why the apostrophe is correct. The explanation shows the meaning of the possessive part of the sentence.)
EXAMPLE C: I didnt really understand the directions. (Original sentence is on the worksheet)
(IC) I didnt really understand the directions. (Copy the original sentence. Write (C) if the sentence is correct, and (IC) if it is incorrect.)
I didn't really understand the directions. (The sentence was incorrect, so rewrite the sentence correctly.)
#6 did not becomes didn't (Rule #6 explains why the apostrophe is necessary. The explanation shows the meaning of the contraction.)
