Make a difference in the life of a child by volunteering to be a Surrogate Parent. Many students with special education needs are from group home settings or have guardians who cannot be located. They need your help. Being a Surrogate Parent means that you will have the “educational rights” for a child who has an Individual Education Plan (IEP). With educational rights comes the responsibility for making educationally-related decisions based on the best interest for the child. The Surrogate Parent holds the same rights as a parent/legal guardian and should be a strong advocate for the child in all education matters.
In order to be a volunteer Surrogate Parent, you will be expected to:
- Have a good working knowledge of the IEP process
- Pass a fingerprint screening & comply with the District’s Volunteer Policy
- Have a flexible schedule to be able to attend meetings
- Attend training & become qualified
