Why choose the Arts?
According to the research on DoSomething.org, students involved in arts programs are three times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, elected to class office, awarded for writing, attendance and participation in a science fair.
The Arts increases engagement in the classroom. There is an overall excitement about learning when the arts are the vehicle through which instruction is delivered.
According to Americans for the Arts, data from The College Board shows that students in the arts outperformed their non-arts peers on the SAT by 100 points.
Eric Jansen of Brainbasedlearning.net points out research that states "In school a strong memory is not just expected, it is priceless...Music training strengthens verbal memory (and) Dance strengthens sound and kinesthetic memory".
Elementary Theater Classes
It is a wonderful privilege to be able to offer Theater Classes to our K-5 students. These classes will by taught by the fabulous Danielle Mickens. Our goal is to help each student tap into their greatest potential. We want to help them develop and use their imagination and creativity, help them become more confident speaking and performing in front of their peers, and most of all, help them learn that it is OK to try something new and even make a mistake or two. Our classes usually start with a game of some sort. These games always have a purpose that helps lead the students to the above goals. Our classes are usually connected in some way to the academic content the students are studying in their homeroom class. We hope that through these classes the students will become just as confident in the regular classroom as they are in mine. And who knows? We may discover a star or two among our Rockets. I'm looking forward to a great year!
Middle School Majors and Minors
Middle School students are taught by me. I am looking forward to a fabulous year with them. Our Minors are only with me for nine weeks, so they will get a "taste" of theater during that time. Our Majors are with me all year and will experience the full thrill of performance. All of our Majors students will be collaborating this year with the chorus and dance majors to produce a Broadway Revue Dinner Theater. Our students will be writing the script and creating the choreography for this fun show. The 7th and 8th grade majors will be learning about directing a show and will be creating the set and props. The second half of the year will be spent working on the sets and props for Matilda and Willy Wonka. The students will learn what is involved in all aspects of putting on a show of that magnitude.
Performance Club Details
Hang on tight - we have an amazing year planned for the performance club!! This year, the students will be divided into two groups: K-2 will work with Ms. Mickens on Seussical Kids and 3rd-8th will work with Mrs. Foster on Matilda Jr.
Our rehearsals will begin in October and if your child commits to the Performance Club, more information about auditions will be coming home soon. We are so excited about our fun-filled year and can't wait to see all of our amazing Rockets hit the stage. Make sure if you sign your students up for Performance Club that you are aware of the commitment. We will be rehearsing multiple days a week until 5:00 and performance will take priority over other commitments. It takes everyone giving 100 percent to pull off the wonderful shows that we have. I can't wait to get started.
