Degrees and Certifications:
Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Education, K-12 certified Diamond Coach, National Speech and Debate Association
Mrs. D. Shellie Hyser
Mrs. Hyser was born in the midwest in a small town full of trees and tornados. During high school, she wrote poetry and short stories that were published in literary magazines and yearbooks, performed in plays and musicals, and joined the speech and debate team where she attended tournaments regularly.
Her first career was as a stay-at-home mother, where she perfected the art of chocolate chip cookie baking and began volunteer coaching the speech and debate team at North Mecklenburg and Myers Park High Schools in CMS. Ready for more, she attended Central Piedmont Community College and later transferred to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to complete her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Education, Summa Cum Laude. While in college, she crewed, stage managed, designed, wrote, acted in, and directed countless productions. She enjoyed coursework in costume and scenic design, play analysis and writing, theatre history, performance, directing, education, and creative writing—all of which prepared her to pursue her dream career in teaching teenagers to make choices and tell their stories.
In 2011, she found her home at Central Cabarrus High School and began to teach with all her heart. She has served as the Fine Arts Department Chair, School Improvement Team Representative, Curriculum Writer, Professional Development Facilitator, Student Teacher Supervisor, and Mentor. Mrs. Hyser received the 2020 Distinguished Alumni Award from the UNCC College of Arts and Architecture.
Recently certified to teach English, she begins her twelfth year at CCHS on a new adventure in English III and STEM English III Honors. While she will miss after-school rehearsals and making theatre magic with her students, she is looking forward to this next chapter with enthusiasm.
Outside of school, she enjoys music, time with friends, creative writing, water coloring, and—above all else—spending time with her husband, seven-year-old, and two adult children—both of whom are CCHS Alumni.

If you want it to happen, baby, hold fast and believe.
You can make it happen, baby, you can be what you please.
All you gotta do is try, then try once again,
Then try a few more times...
Then try after then.
~Jill Scott
