Athletics Home
-
We believe that athletics play an integral role in the physical, mental and social development of young adults and that all student-athletes will develop a lifelong appreciation, understanding, and enjoyment of competitive sports through positive experiences gained through participation in SHUSD athletic programs.
- St. Helena Unified believes that a dynamic program of student activities is vital to the educational development of the student.
- Athletics should provide a variety of experiences to aid in the development of favorable habits and attitudes in students that will prepare them for life in a democratic society.
- Athletics should function as an integral part of the total curriculum. It should offer opportunities to serve the institution, to assist in the development of fellowship and goodwill, to promote self-realization and all-around growth, and to encourage learning the qualities of good citizenship.
- Athletics plays an important part in the life of students. Young people learn a great deal from their participation in interscholastic athletics.
- Lessons in sportsmanship, teamwork, competition, and how to act appropriately both before and after contests, as well as deal with adversity play an integral part of each team in our athletic program. Athletics plays an important part, too, in helping the individual student develop a healthy self-concept as well as a healthy body.
- Athletic competition adds to our school spirit and helps all students - spectators as well as participants - develop pride in their school.
- Leadership should be of the highest quality so as to exemplify to the participants the desired type of behavior to be developed from the athletic program. Measurement of leadership success should not be in terms of the tangible evidence of the victory and defeat record, but rather in the intangible personality development factors that are an outgrowth of the major objectives of the athletic program.
- The athletic program should always be in conformity with the general objectives of the school. Academics are the primary emphasis.
- Athletics should constantly strive for the development of well-rounded individuals, capable of taking their place in modern society.
While we take great pride in winning, we do not condone "winning at any cost" and discourage any and all pressures that might tend to neglect good sportsmanship and good mental health. At all times, the athletic program must be conducted in such a way as to justify it as an educational activity.
A comprehensive and balanced athletic program is an essential complement to the basic program of instruction. The athletic program should provide opportunities for youth to further develop interests and talents in sports. Participation in these activities should provide students with a lifetime basis for personal values for work and leisure activities.
Every effort should be made to support the athletic program with the best facilities, equipment and staff available.
The ultimate goal of the athletic program should be:
- to realize the value of participation without overemphasizing the importance of winning, and
- to develop and improve positive citizenship traits among the program's participants.
SHUSD Athletic Programs
Our schools are proud members of the California Interscholastic Federation-North Coast Section, and the North Central League I South of the Coastal Mountain Conference.
As members of the CIF, the constitution, bylaws, and rules of that organization bind us. However, we are also bound by the rules of our conference, which may be more stringent than rules of the CIF; our own school district may also have rules more stringent than those of the CIF or conference with which we must comply.
