WHAT IS AR?
Accelerated Reader is a reading program used to supplement our adopted reading curriculum. The AR program provides a means for teachers to monitor and get feedback on student's independent reading practice.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Students take the STAR test to determine their ZPD, or zone of proximal development. This is a reading range that the teachers ask the students to choose books and read them independently. Upon completion of a book, the student takes an AR quiz on the computers in the classroom or library. Tests can only be taken at school.
HOW DO I KNOW IF A BOOK HAS AN AR TEST?
AR now is an Internet-based version which allows access to all of the AR quizzes offered by Renaissance Learning. One can go to the AR Book Finder website to find out if a specific book has an AR quiz:
On the website ARbookfind.com, type in the title of the book. If the book has a quiz, it will appear with the BL, or book level, and the Pts, or points, that the quiz is worth.
AR LEVEL DOT CODE:
If a book has a colored dot on at the bottom of the spine, the book has an AR test. The level is written on the dots and points written on the first page of book. The colors and corresponding reading ranges are the following:
- 8-1.99 reading range (1st grade)
- 2.0-2.99 reading range (2nd grade)
- 3.00-3.99 reading range (3rd grade)
- 4.00-4.99 reading range (3rd grade)
- 5.00 and above (5th-8th)
